Why do orientals look the same?

Orientals vs Asians

As mentioned here, Asia is a big place; sub-regions should therefore be used to avoid any ambiguities.

Our good ol’ colonial masters, the British, were aware of this problem very early on and used Oriental to describe people from East, North, and Southeast Asia. ‘Asian’ on the other hand refers to people from South Asia (i.e anyone of Indian descent).

So why the hell do you have a Chinese flag as your featured image?

The map above shows you how geographically proximate China is to Asia in general.

China is bordered to Afghanistan, Bhutan, Hong Kong, India, Kazakhstan, Laos, Macau, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, North Korea, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan and Vietnam.

The reason orientals share similar features, skin tone, hair colour etc is due genetic admixture.

As legend goes, the first emperor of China wanted to live forever. He sent hundreds of officials to look for the elixir of life out on boats.

Years went by and unsurprisingly, the search was uneventful. The team he sent out didn’t return to China where they would be executed for failing to appease the emperor, so they resettled in what we now know as modern Japan and the rest is history.

Ghenghis Khan

A long time ago, a badass called Ghengis Khan founded the Mongolian empire. His sons, their sons and their grandsons eventually crossed the Gobi desert on horseback, invading China. This was known as the Yuan Dynasty.

The Mongolian army were not only skilled horse back archers, they had high amounts of testosterone and ended up raping anything and everything in sight.

Unsurprisingly, 10% of the world has some bloodties to Ghenghis Khan.

Korea was a tributary vassal of China. I.e it was a Chinese colony. Before China lost Korea to Japan, many Koreans adopted Chinese surnames romanized into Korean.

The Silk road

The Silk road was a network of routes used by traders in Ancient China to trade silk and other Chinese commodities. When you have a bunch of Chinese traders travelling around the world, you can safely assume that they would also have sown their seeds and sired some children out of wedlock after meeting exotic women. How they got around the language barrier is anyone’s guess.

World war 2 ended and the Chinese civil war resumed. The nationalists lost and Chiang Kai Shek fled to modern day Taiwan.

Everyone else who could and wanted to, escaped by ship. Ships landed all over East and SouthEast Asia. For this reason, countries like Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Laos, Singapore and Cambodia have huge Chinese populations.
